SAE members continue to move the organization and industry forward with a 79 percent retention rate among global members sustained member growth in 2016. An integral element of the global organization, SAE student membership increased 10 percent since 2014 while the number of active SAE Collegiate Chapters grew 27 percent in the same period. This two-year growth has led to the highest number of student members since 2009.
Part of the success of the past year, specifically with students, can be attributed to improving and expanding faculty advisor communications. Additionally, the introduction of the Career Counselor video series provided more personal/professional training in workplace soft skills such as goal setting and overcoming the fear of presentations. Similar topics are planned for future editions. Expanded workplace development and leadership opportunities included training such as the Section Office Leadership Seminar (SOLS), which received a 93% satisfaction rating from participants.
The Member Connection (MC) community also expanded with improvements resulting in increased member interest and engagement. These improvements included the launch of a Volunteer module designed to streamline the process for connecting members and non-members with available SAE volunteer opportunities. Additionally, a new Mentor site in MC allows mentees to seek counsel and advice from their peers as well as provides mentors with the chance to give back by sharing their own experiences and wisdom.
